“Climate science educator”: we no longer have this stable, predictable system that we had…

jetstream crosses equator scream

Looking at the story about the cross-equatorial flow and the subsequent declaration of an emergency, I became curious about the Beckwith video that would give more explanation. Watching it was quite an experience. This is what he said after introducing himself:

For many years I have been talking about abrupt climate change and how the climate system is no longer behaving like it used to. We no longer have this stable, predictable system that we had. We gone to a chaotic system. As we transition in a non-linear fashion to a warmer world, we see a complete redistribution of jet streams and ocean currents.

Huh?!?!?!

I did’t expect something like that from someone who calls himself a “Climate System” scientist. The climate system, being a complex, coupled, chaotic system, is by its very nature unpredictable. How could he think that it ever was stable and predictable before?

His theory seem to be that our emissions f**ked up the climate system beyond recognition and he finds plentiful confirmation of that in the world around him. It ignores all uncertainties about a complex, coupled and chaotic system that is our climate system. This seems in line with the description of the video where is said (my emphasis):

Unprecedented? Jet Stream Crosses Equator.

The jet stream in the Northern Hemisphere has crossed the equator and joined up with the jet stream in the Southern Hemisphere. This seems like new behaviour, and indicates that climate system mayhem is ongoing.

Our climate system behaviour continues to surprise us in new and scary ways that we have never anticipated, or even seen before.

Welcome to climate chaos. We must declare a global climate emergency.

That is the opposite reaction of what I would expect from a scientist. There are other options than surrendering to the alarm when confronted with something unexpected. Although he seemed surprised about the cross-equatorial flow, yet he has no problem explaining it as an emergency.

After the facts.

Without quantifying, analyzing, investigations or showing comprehension of the new situation.

To me, it seems that he doesn’t look for answers anymore, he seems to already know the answers and want to share those with the world. Calling himself a “climate science educator”. I respectfully have to disagree. If he stopped looking for answers, is sure that the answers he got are the only right one and wants to impose them to others, then I wouldn’t call that “eduction” anymore.

    Climate propaganda is more apt.

Paul is looking for donations, primarily, and looks for any event and tries to associate it with his pseudo theory of climatic system stability, when in fact, we all know, the system of systems is always looking for balance but never achieving it.

Beckwith (and Scribbler) don’t know what they are talking about. Beckwith also edited his blog rather than annotate corrections (as if he had never posting junk called science) when the pro mets weighed in on his video.

People like this guy are desperate to be noticed (he even made a new field for himself :)), “climate change” is a publishing free for all, the absolute junk getting past peer review is astounding and tragic, though given Springer and IEEE published 100+ junk papers created by MIT program, is it any surprise. Abstracts are read, if in agreement, pass, or buddy review, stacked review panel and nepotism.

I think the bottom line is he thought he had something and didn’t even bother research if this was unusual, and he is supposed to be a researcher.. ROFL, he just flew off the handle and made a fool of himself and right at the end, begs for donations.

    “scientist” my posterior!

I also had the impression that he thought he had something, but didn’t research it properly before broadcasting the story. In the video he claimed he was alerted by the Scribbler blog post that came out that “evening”. Yet he had the time to prepare and make the video and even manage to publish it the same day on Youtube. Apparently he couldn’t have much time to research the issue properly.

I don’t have much of a problem with him asking for donations. Several blogs, alarmist or realist, do this. I don’t have the impression that he is doing it for the money or the fame. I could be wrong, but I have the impression that he really believes that there is a climate emergency and he wants to inform the people by making all these videos.
Personally, I find his approach very unscientific. I think he is more an activist than a scientist.

In the meanwhile the saga continues. He made some new posts and videos that raised my eyebrows. There probably will be some more posts on this topic in the future.
